A screening tool, not a verdict
BMI is cheap, fast, and consistent — which makes it useful at the population level and fine as a rough personal marker. What it cannot do is tell muscle apart from fat, or describe where the weight sits on the body.
What to pair it with
Waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure, and basic blood work give a fuller picture than BMI alone.
